Risky Driving Behaviors

Are Millennials The Most Dangerous Drivers?

Driving comes with many risks and it is a driver’s responsibility to do everything in his or her power to minimize these risks by driving safely. Unfortunately, this doesn’t always happen and some drivers are worse than others.

According to a study conducted by the AAA Foundation For Traffic Safety, millennials are actually the most dangerous drivers. The study looked at several risky driving behaviors, including using a cell phone while driving, speeding, and running traffic lights. The study revealed 88.4% of drivers between the ages of 19 and 24 admitted to engaging in one or more risky behaviors in the last month. Unfortunately, older millennials are not much safer, with 79.2% of drivers between the ages of 25 and 39 admitting to risky driving behaviors.

The study revealed risky driving behaviors are a problem across the board. 75.2% of drivers between the ages of 40 and 59 and 67.3% of drivers between the ages of 60 and 74 admitted to risky driving behaviors. The drivers who engage in risky driving behaviors the least often are actually drivers between the ages of 16 and 18 and drivers over 74 years old, with 69.3% and 69.1% of drivers admitting to risky driving behaviors respectively.

The Dangers Of Risky Driving Behaviors

When drivers engage in risky driving behaviors, they are putting themselves and others at extreme risk. Any passengers, surrounding motorists, and nearby pedestrians could suffer immeasurably from a driver sending a text message or speeding through a traffic light. Not only are these behaviors dangerous, they are also illegal.

Speeding or running a traffic light can cost you several hundred dollars in fines. In over 100 Texas cities, using a cell phone while driving is banned, and violators can be fined up to $500.
