When we think about dangerous roads in Texas, usually the larger metropolitan areas come to mind, such as Houston or Dallas. Most of us consider Lubbock to be particularly safe as compared to the larger cities in Texas. Unfortunately, however, a recent report composed by the National Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA) ranked Lubbock as the fourth deadliest city in Texas due to speeding.
According to the report, from 2012 to 2017, a total of 6,939 traffic fatalities were linked to speeding in Texas. Of those, Lubbock accounted for 47, which deemed the city the fourth most dangerous in Texas. The report also revealed an annual speeding fatality rate of 3.06 per 100,000 residents, which is 12% higher than the average across all other cities in Texas with a population of 250,000 people or more.
What factors contribute to the large amount of Lubbock roadway deaths at the hands of careless, speeding drivers? Experts chalk it up to a variety of reasons, including distracted driving and the fact that Lubbock is a hub city many travelers drive through in order to reach other destinations. Despite these possible explanations, many are left questioning what can be done to stop so many speeding accidents and deaths in our city.
Preventing Speeding in Lubbock
One of the simplest things we can do to help prevent speeding in Lubbock is to stop ourselves from engaging in dangerous driving behaviors. Other methods to help reduce Lubbock speeding fatalities include:
- More speed bumps and raised platforms to catch drivers attention.

- More roundabouts to slow traffic down and provide clear instruction on the flow of traffic and right-of-way for drivers.
