Car accidents can be pretty terrifying. Unfortunately, however, they are fairly common and can happen when we least expect it. A local case involving a deadly crash that occurred over the summer is finally getting some closure after a local man accused of causing the incident by racing was indicted.
Raymond Reyes of Lubbock was recently charged with manslaughter and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after he caused a fatal motor vehicle accident while racing his pickup truck. He is accused of recklessly driving the truck that ultimately killed 69-year old Juan Trevino and injured Daniel Trevino. Both Juan Trevino and Daniel Trevino were taken by ambulance to University Medical Center, where Juan passed away the next day.
Witnesses to the incident told law enforcement Reyes was speeding and racing another vehicle prior to crashing into Trevino’s truck. Another witness told police Reyes asked her to help him remove drugs and alcohol from his vehicle. Following his indictment, Reyes could be facing up to 20 years in prison.
The Dangers of Street Racing
Street racing is an incredibly dangerous activity that poses many risks to those directly and indirectly involved. Vehicles engaged in street racing are driving at exceptionally high speeds that are hard to control.
Street racers often exceed speeds of 100 miles per hour, even up to 200 miles per hour. The faster a car is driving, the more damage it can cause to another vehicle, person, or object. Collateral damage often results from street racing. Speeding cars are often more prone to accidents because they are harder for drivers to control.
Street racing is often paired with alcohol and other substances that can impair the driving ability of those racing. When driving at a very fast speed, it becomes easier to hit objects and other vehicles; and, then these objects become agents of destruction themselves, being thrown out in all directions, causing harm to others.
Large or small groups of people often gather to watch cars race illegally. If a spinout or crash occurs, dangerous items like flying debris and fire from burning gasoline may injure large numbers of people.
