It’s often easy to think of cyclists as a nuisance, especially in areas that do not cater towards them with bike lanes. Seeing these experienced bike riders weave in and out of traffic can be scary, especially if you aren’t sure other drivers are paying as much attention or not. Luckily, many cities are paving the way for cyclists with new bike lanes and plans for safer bicycle traffic. The latest metro area to make this list is our very own Lubbock, Texas.
Recently, the city of Lubbock released their finalized draft of the Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan. The main sections of the plan include putting in and improving already established bike lanes throughout the city, while also improving sidewalks and crosswalks for pedestrian safety.
Owner of DFC Cycles and Fitness, Greg Davis said that he believes the area would benefit from bike boulevards or barriers and mechanisms that impede high-speed traffic. “In other words, the auto traffic slows down. You leave the streets accessible to the homeowners on those streets to be able to park on those streets or in front of their homes,” he said. “Auto drivers that want to go faster can choose a different road.”
With Lubbock’s current infrastructure, Davis has said that many bicyclists told him that they don’t feel safe on the roads but he believes the city is changing for the better.
Mayor pro-tem, Jeff Griffith has been following the creation of the plan and believes it will benefit not only bicyclists, but motorists and pedestrians alike. “In my opinion, it benefits the city because it truly is a public safety needs. We need to be respectful of people on bicycles. We need to be respectful of people walking throughout our city,” he said.
The finalized plan must be approved by city council. Once that happens Griffith said changes should begin to take place within the next six months.
