Lubbock residents may have noticed an increase in patrols last month. Law enforcement in Lubbock is making a huge effort to remind drivers about Texas Move Over Laws. In just one three-hour period last month, over 40 cars were pulled over on the loop for not obeying Move Over Laws. While drivers may not have been happy about the citations, the effort to enforce these laws could help save lives.
The Lubbock Department of Public Safety (DPS) is cracking down on enforcement because law enforcement officers being hit by passing cars is a leading cause of death. These fatalities are particularly tragic considering they could be easily avoided.
What Are Move Over Laws?
Move Over Laws dictate when and how a vehicle must accommodate for emergency vehicles like EMS, police, and fire trucks. Motorists approaching any type of emergency vehicle with its lights activated must slow down, and, if possible, change lanes to give the vehicle more space. If drivers cannot change lanes to give emergency vehicles more space, they must slow down to 20 miles per hour below the speed limit.
Sergeant John Gonzalez from Lubbock DPS explained the crack down on violators is to keep officers and other motorists safe. When you see an emergency vehicle like a police car, “pay attention to those lights. Maybe the officer needs to go into the right hand lane or for some reason needs to jump out into the lane of travel,” said Gonzalez.
Lubbock DPS intends to continue the crackdown on Move Over Law violators and citations aren’t cheap. Motorists that don’t abide by Move Over Laws could pay a couple hundred dollars per violation, but this price pales in comparison to the consequences of colliding with a police officer.
